Description:
Dot Day is September 15th-ish. For this activity, we read the book "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds. The book was about a child that said they couldn't draw. The teacher then made the child draw a mark on a piece of paper and made the student feel as if they could draw. It is a great book to show students they can do anything they put their minds to. After reading the book, we put coffee filters on a paper plate, tin foil, or paper and used different media (crayons, markers, sharpies, pastel crayons, etc.) to draw on the coffee filter. Once we were done with our drawing, we painted our picture with watercolor paint.
Extension Activity:
I would use this activity in my future classroom. First I would read "The Dot" to my students and make sure they understand even if they are not the most artistic person in the class, they can still make their own art if they put their mind to it. After reading the book, I would have the students cut their coffee filters into the shape of a leaf. Then I would provide different media for the students to use to decorate their leaves. Once they were done decorating it, I would provide watercolor paint to finalize their leaf. When all the leaves are dry, I will hang them out in the hallway to represent Dot Day and also in the theme of Fall and the leaves changing colors.
